President’s Arts & Humanities Luncheon: “Art as Memory and Archive in Cuba Today” with Prof. Lillian Guerra

March 20, 2020 at 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Prof. Lillian Guerra

Six decades after the Cuban Revolution of 1959 led to the creation of a Communist state, the art of Cuba remains vibrant and complex, reflecting the complex challenges that define Cuban life. The central paradox of achieving liberation through authoritarianism and one-party rule has shaped the ways that Cubans convey experiences – while continuing to condition how they feel joy, longing, desire, tenderness and anxiety. Since 1991, when the Cuban government passed unprecedented reforms allowing artists to sell their work independently of the state, art has become a central archive of Cubans’ collective experience and consciousness – a place where ideas are discussed and depicted that remain taboo in other public realms of Cuban society.
