Music as a Liberatory Process Workshop

A collective songwriting workshop open to the community. No previous musical experience is required. But if you play an instrument please bring it!

Dr. Martha Gonzalez is a Chicana artivista (artist/activist) musician, feminist music theorist and Associate Professor in the Intercollegiate Department of Chicana/o Latina/o Studies at Scripps/Claremont College. Her academic interests have been fueled by her own musicianship as a singer/songwriter and percussionist for Grammy Award (2013) winning band Quetzal. In addition, Gonzalez along with her partner Quetzal Flores has been instrumental in catalyzing the transnational dialogue between Chican@s/Latin@ communities in the U.S and Jarocho communities in Veracruz, Mexico. Gonzalez’s book Chican@ Artivistas: Music, Community, and Transborder Tactics in East Los Angeles will be published by the University of Texas Press in the Spring of 2020.

Juan Perez is a renown bass player in the son jarocho and rock world. Perez has a unique sound that has been sought after by rock musicians in the US, Mexico and Japan. A versatile player and music composer Perez, is a Grammy Award winner and has also been nominated with other music projects.

Quetzal, the band, has made considerable impact in the Los Angeles Chicano music scene. The relevance of Quetzal’s music and lyrics have been noted in a range of publications, from dissertations to scholarly books. Their latest release is titled “Puentes Sonoros” will be on Smithsonian Folkways (June 2020).
