African American Studies: 50 Years at the University of Florida is the first book to explore the creation and development of an African American Studies program at a major university. Published by the Library Press@UF, this volume gives behind-the-scenes access to the history of African American Studies at the University of Florida. In addition to revealing the origins of this remarkable program, the book documents the groundbreaking research contributions of Black faculty at UF. African American Studies: 50 Years at the University of Florida reveals how students, faculty and staff have practiced the distinctive tenets of the field to connect academic rigor with civic engagement, activism and public service. The text features testimonies from Black Floridians about the program’s impact on the South and includes reflections by and about prominent UF alumni and scholars such as Patricia Hilliard-Nunn, Judge Stephan Mickle, David Horne and many more!

Jake Gordon and Paul Ortiz, co-editors of African American Studies: 50 Years at the University of Florida, will discuss the making of the book, and several chapter authors will be in attendance as well. Prepare to engage in dynamic discussion of the past, present and future of African American Studies at the University of Florida!
