HyFlex is the newest buzzword in higher education, referring to a course delivery mode that allows an instructor to teach both online and in-person students simultaneously. While UF has spent considerable time and money into outfitting classroom space with technology to make this happen, less has been done to address the pedagogical concerns inherent in this model. In particular, language courses – which depend on student-teacher and student-student interaction in the target language – face definite challenges. In this roundtable, several language faculty will share tips, tricks and ideas for maximizing our courses next semester in and in spite of the hyflex delivery. There will be time for Q&A and informal discussion as well.

Presenters:

  • Overview of equipment: Dr. Gillain Lord (Spanish)
  • Working with online and in person populations: Dr. Jennifer Wooten (Spanish)
  • Ideas for practicing writing: Dr. Theresa Antes (French)
  • Ideas for collaborative reading: Dr. Diane Richardson (German)
  • Maximizing asynchronous assignments: Yasuo Uotate (Japanese)
  • Flipped classroom techniques: Han Xu (Chinese)
  • Fair assessment of both modalities: Andréa Ferreira (Portuguese)
  • Ed Tech tools for collaborative learning: Nathalie Ciesco (French)
