Sidney Homan

Sidney Homan, Professor of English at the University of Florida, also serves as a director and a member of the Board of Directors at Gainesville’s Acrosstown Repertory Theatre.  He has, in particular, written and staged plays with a special focus on Gainesville: namely, More Letters to the Editor (the dialogue drawn from actual letters to The Gainesville Sun) and Black Voices (a celebration of African-American literature, speeches, music, and dance involving members of the community).  He has been a teacher for the Gainesville Association for the Creative Arts, a participant in its annual Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Writers Workshop, and behind the program “Shakespeare, Summer, and Kids,” which involved local at-risk students who formed an acting company to do Shakespeare.  In addition, through grants from the Florida Humanities Council, he has toured the city and the state with programs involving theatrical performance and audience discussion.  His work as Artist-in-Residence for Shands Arts in Medicine Program has led to a book A Fish in the Moonlight: Growing Up in the Bone Marrow Unit, coming out this June from Purdue University Press.  He is a frequent visitor to area middle- and high schools.
