The College is pleased to announce that Dr. David Pharies has been appointed to the position of Associate Dean for the Humanities.

In addition to overseeing humanities departments, centers, and programs, Dr. Pharies will also be responsible for language labs and student complaints, and will help coordinate the activities of the College Curriculum Committee.

Dr. Pharies received his Ph.D. in Romance Linguistics in 1979 from the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied with the renowned Romanist Yakov Malkiel.

He has been on the faculty of the University of Florida since 1980, serving as chair of the Department of Romance Languages from 2003 to 2008, and as chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies from 2008 to 2010.

He has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and the Fulbright Association.

Among his most notable publications are his Diccionario etimológico de los sufijos españoles [Etymological Dictionary of Spanish Suffixes] (Madrid: Gredos, 2002), University of Chicago Spanish Dictionary, fifth edition (University of Chicago Press, 2002), and Breve historia de la lengua española / A Brief History of the Spanish Language (published simultaneously in Spanish and English by the University of Chicago Press, 2007). He is currently preparing, together with Prof. Irene Moyna of Texas A&M University, the sixth edition of this same bilingual dictionary.

Dr. Pharies describes himself as a pragmatist whose main goal is to serve as an effective liaison between the College office and the humanities departments and centers.  Additionally, he looks forward to working with the chairs and faculty of these units toward the common goal of enhancing the status of the humanities in the College and University.
