UF Research Initiative on African American History Contributes to Award-Winning Book

Old South, New South, Down South?: Florida and the Modern Civil Rights Movement (West Virginia Press) has been awarded the 2010 Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Book Award by the Florida Historical Society.

Samuel Proctor Oral History Program director Paul Ortiz used oral history interviews featured in the program’s Alachua County African-American History Project to write the book’s afterward titled “Towards a New Civil Rights History in Florida.” The Alachua County African American History Project is funded by a grant from the UF Office of the Provost.

This book award was named in honor of the late Harry and Harriette Moore, who were murdered in 1951 because of their civil rights and voter registration efforts throughout Florida. The Moore Book Award recognizes an outstanding book or monograph relating to Florida's ethnic groups, or dealing with a significant social issue from a historical perspective. Professor Ortiz’s book Emancipation Betrayed was the recipient of the 2006 Moore Book Award.

The award will be presented to the editor of Old South, New South, Down South, Professor Irvin D.S. Winsboro, of Florida Gulf Coast University, at the Society’s Annual Meeting in St. Augustine on May 27. The Florida Historical Society was founded in 1856.
