Center for African Studies Students Receive Record Number of Fulbright-Hays Research Abroad Awards
Five doctoral students in the Center for African Studies have received Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad grants this year, more than any previous student class from the center.
This program provides grants to colleges and universities to fund individual doctoral students who conduct research in other countries from six to twelve months in modern foreign languages and area studies.
The winners are:
- Jessica Morey, Department of History, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Morey will travel to Nigeria to conduct research for her dissertation, Student Power in Nigeria: Influence and Implications, 1956-2006.
- Amy Schwartzott, School of Art and Art History, College of Fine Arts. Schwartzott will travel to Mozambique to conduct research for her dissertation, Weapons and Refuse as Media: The Potent Politics of Recycling in Mozambican Urban Arts.
- Meredith Marten, Department of Anthropology, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Marten will travel to Tanzania to conduct research for her dissertation, Public Health Intervention and Disenrollment: Coping Strategies Among HIV+ Women in Tanzania.
- Cara Jones, Department of Political Science, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Jones will travel to Burundi to conduct research for her dissertation, Rebels with a Cause: Organization, Structure, and Post-Conflict Outcomes in Burundi.
- Steve Lichty, Department of Political Science, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Lichty will travel to Kenya to conduct research for his dissertation, Between Pulpit and Pew: Religious Influence on Political Belief and Behavior in Kenya.
