Allan Burns

Head of the CLAS

The Board of Directors of the Society for Applied Anthropology has elected Professor Allan F. Burns as president of the international association.

Burns is the Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs of the College of Liberal Arts ans Sciences and and a professor and former chair of the Department of Anthropology. Beginning in March he will serve for one year as president-elect, followed by two years as president.

The society was founded in 1941 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, by a group concerned with the application of the social sciences to contemporary issues. The membership today, currently at 3,500, is largely located in the Americas, although active members are located in 38 other countries. The multi-disciplinary organization includes members with training in anthropology, sociology, economics, public health, geography, nutrition, and more. It publishes two quarterly journals, including the highly-respected "Human Organization" and the widely-popular "Practicing Anthropology."

Burns graduated from the University of Washington in 1973 with a Ph.D. in anthropology. His research has focused on the Yucatan Region of Mexico. He has administered a student exchange program for many years with the Autonomous University of the Yucatan. Among other prestigious offices, he is a member of the Foundation Board of the University del Valle of Guatemala, as well as a consultant with the Minister of Education in Honduras. Burns also serves as a member of the technical advisory board on infectious disease for the Pan American Health Organization.
