Welcome Back to CLAS!

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences welcomes its faculty and students back to campus for another productive year in the university’s largest college. Many exciting new initiatives are on the horizon, and we look forward to the opportunities they will provide.

University-wide, more than 35,000 students will be taking courses in CLAS, led by our esteemed faculty of 800 scholars. The college has seen the largest growth in student demand for pre-medicine courses, and the interdisciplinary major, integrative biology, is the fastest growing course of study. Starting Summer B of 2007, CLAS will begin offering a full-fledged biology major for the countless number of UF students planning to attend medical school.

While many students and faculty were away this summer, the college broke ground on the future home of the Bob Graham Center for Public Service, Jim and Alexis Pugh Hall. A formal groundbreaking ceremony will take place on September 30, and Senator Graham was among the many new faces navigating around campus on the first day of class September 23—laying the roots for the new center.

The fall semester marks the beginning of classes being held within the newly restored Ustler Hall (formally known as the Women’s Gym). The lovely facility is now home to the Center for Women’s Studies and Gender Research, which moved in over the month of July. A formal dedication service is planned for September 29.
